God is in the Interruptions

We’ve all heard the saying “God is in the interruptions”. Usually, it’s in the midst of a busy day, smack dab in the middle of when you’re trying to get stuff done. The temperature was in the 90s, and the air conditioner in the truck wasn’t working. I was alone, driving down Pearl Street in Brockton heading back to My Brother’s Keeper, sweating and thinking about all the things on my to-do list.

I drove by a woman lying under a tree who was very red faced and had her bike and her bags all around her on the ground. I thought, “poor thing” and kept driving. I saw a convenient store, thought about stopping to buy her a drink, but kept driving. About thirty seconds later, I turned around and headed to the store. I went to the cooler and bought a sports drink and an ice cold water.

I walked out of the store and saw the woman back on her bike, coming my way. She looked hot and tired.

I stepped out on the sidewalk, smiled and gave her a friendly wave as she approached. I held out the two drinks and said “It’s so hot out – I saw you under the tree back there and thought you could use a cold drink”.

Right away she chose the sports drink and gave a big smile and thanked me. I told her “no problem – I know I’m pretty thirsty, so I figured I’d get a drink for you too”.

As I got back into the truck, she shouted out “God Bless you!” and rode away.

I smiled, knowing God is definitely in the interruptions.
